Every week, several GEL students are assigned to lead activities during the Engineering Leadership Lab, and those students are assessed by members of the program (staff or GEL 2-Year students). The assessors fill out a blue card with feedback on the students performance as a leader. The assessed students then fill out a yellow card on their own time. Yes! The blue and yellow cards are actually blue and yellow! The two-letter abbreviations stand for various capabilities of engineering leadership. For example, IR means Initiative and Resourcefulness and DC means Diverse Connections./font size=1 So, why go through all these variously colored cards? Its all about feedback. Feedback and self-assessment are effective ways to track ones progress in a leadership program, when you cant really assign p-sets to test students understanding of the material. But arent we getting maybe one card a month? How does that change anything? Yes, this requires the little by little argument, where I say that with each yellow card I fill out about myself, I learn just a little more than I did before about my role as a leader. Not convinced? Well, heres another situation where a little bit of encouragement went a long way. This past weekend, MITs Cross Country Team raced at the New England Division III Regional Championships, the qualifying meet for NCAA Division III National Championships next weekend. The thing is, no matter how many times I told myself this is just another race, Regionals isnt quite any ol race. You hear Sandstorm, Shipping off to Boston, and Dont Stop Believing over the speakers. There are NCAA signs everywhere. But the biggest difference from other races? The people. So many people. These people arent racers. Theres a lot on the line. And then, suddenly, all goes quiet. Like All Quiet on the Western Massachusetts Front quiet. As the starter walks out in front of more than 300 athletes, everyone knows to shut up. Teams have cheered, coaches have made their statements and walked away, runners have grown still and now sort themselves along the single chalk line. On race day, time doesnt feel normal. What seems like two seconds later, Im warming up with the womens team. At one point, the guys race goes by and I notice Pauls REALLY close to the front. And then, woah, Roys up there too! And Dan! And theres Stephen! And Gihan and Richard are coming up, too! And there goes Joe! We knew. Something was happening. The guys win a race that at the start they were ranked to be in 9th place. The women get 4th, which doesnt seem quite as glamorous when compared to the guys miracle 8-km race, but we still know that we raced our best. Plus, the women’s 4th place finish is good enough to qualify for Nationals in Iowa, so the team gets another chance, along with the guys, to race hard next weekend. Anyway, had it not been for the cardinal and grey whirlwind tearing across fields and wilderness to get to the next best cheering spot, it would have been pretty difficult to convince ourselves to keep pushing the pace. Sure, we could hear the cheers for only a few seconds before we passed the MIT cheering squad, but this is a 6-km race. Add up all those strategically placed words of encouragement, and its really hard to forget why were racing. The point is, feedback is important and meaningful. The results of feedback arent always immediately tangible (like in the weekly GEL ELLs), but can be extremely motivational (like at XC Regionals). To all those who were out there cheering, screaming, waving signs, and bearing body paint proudly: your feedback definitely worked.

A study reported in The College Student Journal, â€Å"The Changing Nature of Racism On College Campuses: Study of Discrimination at a Northeastern Public University† explained that there are a lot of college students that feel the pressure of discrimination even today, although it is less obvious now. The study used three minority groups (Black, Asian and Hispanic) proportionally from the percentage that those groups represent in the campus minority. They were asked questions on the topic of racism, and more specifically, if and how they have been affected by it. As already stated before, the results showed that racism is still a prominent issue. The interesting part is that the longer minority students are on campus, the more likely they are to experience some sort of racially motivated attack, whether it is verbal abuse, physical abuse, or mental abuse. To get rid of schism, we must simply stop talking about it. Now one may think that it is hypocritical to write and talk on the topic of racism and how people need to stop talking about it. But too many people bring up the subject in a manner that has no positive drive to get rid of it. That is the purpose of this essay. As long as the news continues to put it in our brains that all of these shootings and police killings were a matter of race, then people will continue to think in terms of race and how white cops are evil. Let that statement not be misconstrued. There are most definitely evil cops out there, both white and lack. Some of those cases involving multiple races may have had some form of racism involved. But for people to instantly get angry at the other race simply because their skin color is a few shades lighter or darker is absolutely ridiculous. Let us take the recent Eric Garner case. What we see is a video of a white cop choking out a black man who supposedly is â€Å"acting within his rights†. But that is about as far as people are willing to look into the case. But let us get the facts straight. There is no doubt that Garner was resisting an arrest for illegally selling untaxed cigarettes. Former New York City police Commissioner Bernard Keri put it succinctly: â€Å"You cannot resist arrest. If Eric Garner did not resist arrest, the outcome of this case would have been very different -? he wouldn’t be dead today. † The video of the incident clearly shows Garner, an African-American, swatting away the arms of a white officer seeking to take him into custody, telling him: â€Å"Don’t touch me! † Garner, 43, had history of more than 30 arrests dating back to 1 980, on charges including assault and grand larceny. At the time of his death, Garner was out on bail after being charged with illegally selling cigarettes, driving without a license, Arizona possession and false impersonation. The chuckhole that Patrolman Daniel Pantaloon put on Garner was reported to have contributed to his death, but it was not the primary cause. Garner, who was 6-foot-3 and weighed 350 pounds, suffered from a number of health problems, including heart disease, severe asthma, diabetes, obesity, and sleep apneas. Pantaloons attorney and police union officials argued that Granger’s poor health was the main cause of his death. Garner did not die at the scene of the confrontation. He suffered cardiac arrest in the ambulance taking him to the hospital and was pronounced dead about an hour later. Much has been made of the fact that the use of chuckholes by police is prohibited in New York City. But officers reportedly still use them. Between 2009 and mid-2014, the Civilian Complaint Review Board received 1, 128 chuckhole allegations. Patrick Lynch, president of the New York City Patrolman’s Benevolent Association, said: â€Å"It was clear that the officer’s intention was to do nothing more than take Mr.. Garner into custody as instructed, and that he used the attacked technique that he learned in the academy when Mr.. Garner refused. † The grand jury began hearing the case on Septet. 29 and did not reach a decision until Wednesday, so there is much testimony that was presented that has not been made public. The 23-member grand jury included nine non-white jurors. In order to find Officer Pantaloon criminally negligent, the grand jury would have had to determine that he knew there was a â€Å"substantial risk† that Garner would have died due to the attacked. Now if there is anything that one can take away from this case alone, it is that people need to study more, listen to reporters less, and think for themselves. People should never take in and believe everything they hear about these cases. This will cause racism to only et worse. Because now you go from black and white evidence, to simply black and white skin, with no evidence or research at all – whereas if it were two white guys in an altercation, the story would never make headlines. And in turn, if it were a black cop that killed a black man, it would be at least somewhat understandable, and possibly even justifiable. What is sickening is the fact that this is not the only case in which the media produced either partial information or false information all together. There is a reason why people say, â€Å"Don’t believe everything you read on the internet. † Another way n which some people believe racism is being held in place is through black history month. In an interview, well respected, African-American actor Morgan Freeman asks, â€Å"You are going relegate my history to one month of the year? Which month is white history? There isn’t one. Black history is American history. Treat it as such. † This issue of whether or not black history should be celebrated is debatable from both sides of the spectrum. But understand where Freeman is coming from. Racism is only an issue because of the people who continue to make it an issue. Discriminating others by race is not something that humans naturally want to do. No one is born racist. The issue (as addressed once already) is that racism is continually being passed down from one generation to the next, and additionally, the news and our beloved political leaders continue to make it an issue. Race needs to be irrelevant in the political and socioeconomic sphere. Now to some extent, people should recognize the differences between the varying races. But the differences that should be recognized are that of the beauty and variety of all the different colors, backgrounds, and histories of these races. But never in the form of a so-called â€Å"recognition† of specific abilities to certain races, and specially so as to distinguish it as inferior or superior to another race. Media stereotypes of â€Å"angry black women† have become more noticeable in recent years, and this stereotype is effecting how people see race. Black women in the media are more than often portrayed as dark skin, loud â€Å"ghetto acting† women. There have been television shows that have tried to help with different races such as the Jefferson’s and The Cosby Show. Those shows were still criticized for their use of stereotyped black characters. Another television show named Ugly Betty, had a main character who was a light skinned women named Wilhelmina. Wilhelmina simply was not seen as a black women because of her social mobility and her light colored skin and eyes. That statement alone from the fans of Ugly Betty, brings up colorblind racism or media stereotype racism. If we want to become a colorblind society then the media needs to do a better job at being colorblind. People of different races and ethnicities help to bring different personalities to the media which can be a very positive thing. In conclusion, the world would be a better, more positive place if we were completely colorblind. Those were no the only areas affected. Many areas up to 70 and 100 miles away could feel the tremble of the quake. The epicenter of the quake was in the Santa Cruz Mountains. The quake measured a magnitude of 7.1. The initial quake lasted 15 seconds. The USGS first thought the magnitude of the quake would be about 6.9 but it increased to 7.1. The quake destroyed many buildings and freeways. A section of the San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge collapsed. The power was out in many places and the telephone lines were out also. This was the first time the power had been out since the 1906 earthquake. The earthquake killed 68 people and injured 3,757 people. The cost of the quake was estimated at $6 to $7 billion dollars. The quake happened during the 1989 World Series. The San Francisco Giants were playing the Oakland Athletics. The match up was called the ?Bay Bridge? World Series. The game was postponed for a month. They were playing at Candlestick Park. Airports were closed for inspection or repairs. Ceiling Tiles and broken glass were the main reason for the airports being closed. Researchers investigated residues on the interior of several bowls dated to the earliest societies in Mesoamerica using mass spectrometry and discovered evidence of Theobromine within a tecomate at Paso de la Amada, a Mokaya site in southern Chiapas, Mexico. They also found a bowl testing positive for Theobromine from the El Manati Olmec site in Veracruz, dated roughly 1650-1500 BC. Mechanical Strength of Mild Steel Introduction CE 2.1 One day on National Geographic channel I was watching a program in which they were experimenting with the finite element analysis software to observe structure and thermal load effects on the wing of Boeing 747s wing. Luckily, during the same time, in my 8th semester back in 2013 we were taught the introduction to Finite Element Methods by our professor, Dr. Ijaz Ahmed Chaudhary in University of Engineering and Technology, Lahore. The curiosity in that subject laid the initial foundations of my interesting project named as Drop Test Calculations for Mild Steel where I worked as a Team Leader. This experience paved my way to two more leadership roles. Background CE 2.2 It was almost four years in UET Lahore. And being a student of engineering I almost had the fundamental knowledge of the field by that point. I wanted to use my theoretical knowledge in some practical way. I had already studied the mechanics of materials 1 and 2. And performed various experiments in lab to find out the material properties such as; ductility, malleability, brittleness and toughness. In 8th semester ANSYS was being used as external load analysis software in Finite Element Analysis course. I was assigned a project to select a topic and perform it in the lab and as well as analyze it using ANSYS. That was a good opportunity to gain practical experience and integrate the knowledge of Mechanics of Materials and Finite Element Analysis. Nature of Project: CE 2.3 This project included the calculation for drop testing of mild steel. In industry and real world different items and object face different kind of environmental conditions. Drop testing was used for shock loading effects. First of all, theoretical modeling was done for drop table to check either items can survive shock or not. Then commercial finite element software was used to investigate the response of drop table. Objective of the Project: CE 2.4 The objective of the report was to determine mechanical strength of mild steel. I had to use drop testing method then I investigated its behavior on finite element software. Nature of My Particular Work Area CE 2.5 In this project, I had to perform calculations for drop table by taking it as a fixed beam at both ends and applying a sinusoidal shock load of 100 gram. Then calculations were made to calculate the maximum binding stress produced in drop table. CE 2.6 Organizational Structure CE 2.7 Statement of Duties Being leader of the group my scope of duties included: To plan the project for timely completion. To make work packs to ensure health and safety. Conduct meeting with members and supervisor for mutual feedback. Theoretical calculation of drop test mechanism on mild steel. Report writing and technical presentation. Personal Engineering Activity CE 2.8 I started with literature review about drop testing and FEA on internet and library. Subsequent discussions with my professor led me up to kick off my calculations. The second step of course was to select certain parameters and their dimensions for drop testing. These parameters are given in the table below. The drop table material and the shock load value was assigned to us by our professor. I chose the dimensions of the table and mass of test item carefully. If the mass of the table is too less it wont be able to bear the shock itself let alone the test item. To make things more clear, test item is always on the top of table when shock is being applied on it. Shock duration, , is 0.01 s and the natural time period, , is given as below: Where ,, is the static deflection and is calculated as follows: Where, W = Weight per unit length, N/m = E = Youngs modulus of Elasticity of Mild Steel = 210 x 109 N/m2 So, after substituting the values in the above equation Hence, As a result, CE 2.9 By using the graph below in Figure 1, we deduce that F factor comes out to be 1.2. Figure 1: Calculation of Factor F Moreover, some of the basic calculations are done below: Dynamic load is calculated as Pd = F * M * AA= Applied Shock = 100gM= Total Weight/gravitational force (g) Therefore , Pd = 33930 Newton Now, I have to calculate maximum bending stress Max Bending Stress =(Bending Moment * Distance from axis)/ Inertia Max Bending Stress = 48.88 MPa I verified the bending moment calculations as they were performed by my team mate and it is beyond the scope of this report to discuss it fully here. CE 2.9 According to the principle of mechanics, if the maximum bending stress produced by the applied load is less than the ultimate tensile strength of the material then the material can withstand the applied load without failure and vice versa. In this case, since the ultimate tensile strength of mild steel is 165 MPa which is greater than the maximum bending stress of 48.88 MPa produced by the applied load, drop table will easily sustain the 100 g shock loading. CE 2.10 Computational dynamics came into play in the form of FEA as I used ANSYS to simulate static deflection of the drop table subjected to 100 g shock loading. The load is applied on the top surface of drop table in form of pressure and both ends of the table are fixed by using fixed support. Material properties used for the drop table are shown in the figure 2 below. Figure 2: Material properties of the test piece CE 2.11 I still remember that there came a point where my team was very much stressed out because of the criticality of the extensive calculations involved. In fact, my team failed in couple of iterative processes and they wanted to give up on this project. I summoned a meeting where I emphasized on the fact that every failure is itself a step towards success. By omitting those factors which are causing us disappointment should be identified and removed. My team appreciated the gesture and went on to complete the project with more enthusiasm and that is when we finally got the 3D mesh of the work piece as shown below in figure 3: Figure 3: 3D meshing of the drop table The parameters for meshing details are show in figure 4 below. Figure 4: Meshing parameters obtained during FEA CE 2.11 After the meshing, the sinusoidal shock load of 100 g, shown in figure below, depicts that the maximum Von Mises stress produced in drop table amounts to be 50.23 MPa. Our theoretical calculated maximum stress comes out to be 48.88 MPa. Again, I can surely say that this stress is within the bearable load limits of the table load and hence wont fracture. The stress patterns are shown in figure 5 below. Figure 5: Static structural analysis of drop table CE 2.12 Mild steel is a very stiff material so a very high shock wave is generated when drop table hits the mild steel. On the other hand, due to its stiffness the duration of the shock is very low. In case of mild steel peak shock value calculated was 55.84 g when a drop table is dropped from a height of 330 m. Below figure 6 depicts this behavior in the form of a graph. Figure 6: Shock loading VS Time Graph CE 2.13 Von Mises stress contours produced when drop table strikes with mild steel attached sensors are shown in the figure below. Stress contours clearly shows that high stresses are produced in region where drop table makes contact with the object. Highest stress produced is 49.9 MPa as shown in figure 7. Figure7: Von Mises stress contours produced in case of mild steel programmers contact CE 2.14 As we had to use Lab with heavy machinery and metal pieces, I made sure that every used proper safety procedure such as wearing PPE. Toolbox talks and near miss discussions were conducted before every session. That was the reason project was completed without any accidents. Summary CE 2.15 The timely completion of this project boosted up my technical knowledge and had an ever lasting impact on my people and time management skills. Later on, during one of my internships I realized that my quality check department was facing a material failure issue. Keeping in view this project I performed the drop testing and deduced that the material wasnt strong enough to resist the stresses and buckled in extreme loading conditions. My study was well praised and they switched from Steel to Aluminum and since then have got fewer failures.

Michelangelo Buonarroti, the greatest of the Italian Renaissance artists, was born on March 6, 1475, in the small village of Caprese (Today, Caprese is known as Caprese Michelangelo or Tuscany, Italy). Michelangelo grew up in Florence, Italy. His Father was a government administrator and his Mother died when he was only six years old. After the death of his mother Michelangelo lived with a stone cutter and his family in the town of Settignano, where his father owned a marble quarry and small farm. Along with living with a stone cutter (where he learned to handle marble), Michelangelo's influences included da Vinci and Dominico Ghirlandaio. Michelangelo showed no interest in school, he preferred to copy paintings from churches and seek the company of painters. His artistic talents were noticed at a very early age. At the age of thirteen, Michelangelo was apprenticed to the painter Domenico Ghirlandaio. At age fourteen Michelangelo’s father persuaded Ghirlandaio to pay Michelangelo as an artist, which was unusual at the time. Demonstrating obvious talent, he was taken under the wing of Lorenzo de' Medici, the ruler of the Florentine republic and a great patron of the arts. For two years beginning in 1490, he lived in the Medici palace and attended the Humanist academy, where he was a student of the sculptor Bertoldo di Giovanni and studied the Medici art collection, which included ancient Roman statuary. At the academy, both Michelangelo’s outlook and his art was influenced by many of the most prominent philosophers and writers of the day. At this time Michelangelo sculpted the Madonna of the Steps (1490-1492) and Battle of the Centaurs (1491-1492). Lorenzo de Medici, the man who gave Michelangelo the tools and schooling to perfect his artistry, passed away in 1492. Michelangelo decided that it was time to return home to his family, but he continued studying on his own. Although the practice was forbidden at the time by the church, Michelangelo got special permission to study anatomy of the dead at a hospital in the church of Santo Spirito. He used his new knowledge of the human body to create some of his most famous works, including the famous statue of David (1501-1504), the sculptures in the Church of San Pietro, and the Creation of Adam on the Sistine Chapel’s ceiling, which there is a hypotheses that part of it is shaped like the human brain. Michelangelo’s love for sculpture continued to grow, and so did the attention of the world to his work. His demand as an artist grew, and he began creating some of the most famous works of his career. Later in life he fell in love with Vittoria Colonna. She was a widow and friend to Michelangelo in his later maturity.
