Every week, several GEL students are assigned to lead activities during the Engineering Leadership Lab, and those students are assessed by members of the program (staff or GEL 2-Year students). The assessors fill out a blue card with feedback on the students performance as a leader. The assessed students then fill out a yellow card on their own time. Yes! The blue and yellow cards are actually blue and yellow! The two-letter abbreviations stand for various capabilities of engineering leadership. For example, IR means Initiative and Resourcefulness and DC means Diverse Connections./font size=1 So, why go through all these variously colored cards? Its all about feedback. Feedback and self-assessment are effective ways to track ones progress in a leadership program, when you cant really assign p-sets to test students understanding of the material. But arent we getting maybe one card a month? How does that change anything? Yes, this requires the little by little argument, where I say that with each yellow card I fill out about myself, I learn just a little more than I did before about my role as a leader. Not convinced? Well, heres another situation where a little bit of encouragement went a long way. This past weekend, MITs Cross Country Team raced at the New England Division III Regional Championships, the qualifying meet for NCAA Division III National Championships next weekend. The thing is, no matter how many times I told myself this is just another race, Regionals isnt quite any ol race. You hear Sandstorm, Shipping off to Boston, and Dont Stop Believing over the speakers. There are NCAA signs everywhere. But the biggest difference from other races? The people. So many people. These people arent racers. You hear teammates giving their last pep talks, which vary from this is our last race of the season or first time at Regionals to this is my last race for Cross Country ever. Theres a lot on the line. And then, suddenly, all goes quiet. Like All Quiet on the Western Massachusetts Front quiet. As the starter walks out in front of more than 300 athletes, everyone knows to shut up. Teams have cheered, coaches have made their statements and walked away, runners have grown still and now sort themselves along the single chalk line. On race day, time doesnt feel normal. What seems like two seconds later, Im warming up with the womens team. At one point, the guys race goes by and I notice Pauls REALLY close to the front. And then, woah, Roys up there too! And Dan! And theres Stephen! And Gihan and Richard are coming up, too! And there goes Joe! We knew. Something was happening. The guys win a race that at the start they were ranked to be in 9th place. The women get 4th, which doesnt seem quite as glamorous when compared to the guys miracle 8-km race, but we still know that we raced our best. Plus, the women’s 4th place finish is good enough to qualify for Nationals in Iowa, so the team gets another chance, along with the guys, to race hard next weekend. Anyway, had it not been for the cardinal and grey whirlwind tearing across fields and wilderness to get to the next best cheering spot, it would have been pretty difficult to convince ourselves to keep pushing the pace. Sure, we could hear the cheers for only a few seconds before we passed the MIT cheering squad, but this is a 6-km race. Add up all those strategically placed words of encouragement, and its really hard to forget why were racing. The point is, feedback is important and meaningful. The results of feedback arent always immediately tangible (like in the weekly GEL ELLs), but can be extremely motivational (like at XC Regionals). To all those who were out there cheering, screaming, waving signs, and bearing body paint proudly: your feedback definitely worked.

A study reported in The College Student Journal, â€Å"The Changing Nature of Racism On College Campuses: Study of Discrimination at a Northeastern Public University† explained that there are a lot of college students that feel the pressure of discrimination even today, although it is less obvious now. The study used three minority groups (Black, Asian and Hispanic) proportionally from the percentage that those groups represent in the campus minority. They were asked questions on the topic of racism, and more specifically, if and how they have been affected by it. As already stated before, the results showed that racism is still a prominent issue. The interesting part is that the longer minority students are on campus, the more likely they are to experience some sort of racially motivated attack, whether it is verbal abuse, physical abuse, or mental abuse. To get rid of schism, we must simply stop talking about it. Now one may think that it is hypocritical to write and talk on the topic of racism and how people need to stop talking about it. But too many people bring up the subject in a manner that has no positive drive to get rid of it. That is the purpose of this essay. As long as the news continues to put it in our brains that all of these shootings and police killings were a matter of race, then people will continue to think in terms of race and how white cops are evil. Let that statement not be misconstrued. There are most definitely evil cops out there, both white and lack. Some of those cases involving multiple races may have had some form of racism involved. But for people to instantly get angry at the other race simply because their skin color is a few shades lighter or darker is absolutely ridiculous. Let us take the recent Eric Garner case. What we see is a video of a white cop choking out a black man who supposedly is â€Å"acting within his rights†. But that is about as far as people are willing to look into the case. But let us get the facts straight. There is no doubt that Garner was resisting an arrest for illegally selling untaxed cigarettes. Former New York City police Commissioner Bernard Keri put it succinctly: â€Å"You cannot resist arrest. If Eric Garner did not resist arrest, the outcome of this case would have been very different -? he wouldn’t be dead today. † The video of the incident clearly shows Garner, an African-American, swatting away the arms of a white officer seeking to take him into custody, telling him: â€Å"Don’t touch me! † Garner, 43, had history of more than 30 arrests dating back to 1 980, on charges including assault and grand larceny. At the time of his death, Garner was out on bail after being charged with illegally selling cigarettes, driving without a license, Arizona possession and false impersonation. The chuckhole that Patrolman Daniel Pantaloon put on Garner was reported to have contributed to his death, but it was not the primary cause. Garner, who was 6-foot-3 and weighed 350 pounds, suffered from a number of health problems, including heart disease, severe asthma, diabetes, obesity, and sleep apneas. Pantaloons attorney and police union officials argued that Granger’s poor health was the main cause of his death. Garner did not die at the scene of the confrontation. He suffered cardiac arrest in the ambulance taking him to the hospital and was pronounced dead about an hour later. Much has been made of the fact that the use of chuckholes by police is prohibited in New York City. But officers reportedly still use them. Between 2009 and mid-2014, the Civilian Complaint Review Board received 1, 128 chuckhole allegations. Patrick Lynch, president of the New York City Patrolman’s Benevolent Association, said: â€Å"It was clear that the officer’s intention was to do nothing more than take Mr.. Garner into custody as instructed, and that he used the attacked technique that he learned in the academy when Mr.. Garner refused. † The grand jury began hearing the case on Septet. 29 and did not reach a decision until Wednesday, so there is much testimony that was presented that has not been made public. The 23-member grand jury included nine non-white jurors. In order to find Officer Pantaloon criminally negligent, the grand jury would have had to determine that he knew there was a â€Å"substantial risk† that Garner would have died due to the attacked. Now if there is anything that one can take away from this case alone, it is that people need to study more, listen to reporters less, and think for themselves. People should never take in and believe everything they hear about these cases. This will cause racism to only et worse. Because now you go from black and white evidence, to simply black and white skin, with no evidence or research at all – whereas if it were two white guys in an altercation, the story would never make headlines. And in turn, if it were a black cop that killed a black man, it would be at least somewhat understandable, and possibly even justifiable. What is sickening is the fact that this is not the only case in which the media produced either partial information or false information all together. There is a reason why people say, â€Å"Don’t believe everything you read on the internet. † Another way n which some people believe racism is being held in place is through black history month. In an interview, well respected, African-American actor Morgan Freeman asks, â€Å"You are going relegate my history to one month of the year? Which month is white history? There isn’t one. Black history is American history. Treat it as such. † This issue of whether or not black history should be celebrated is debatable from both sides of the spectrum. But understand where Freeman is coming from. Racism is only an issue because of the people who continue to make it an issue. Discriminating others by race is not something that humans naturally want to do. No one is born racist. The issue (as addressed once already) is that racism is continually being passed down from one generation to the next, and additionally, the news and our beloved political leaders continue to make it an issue. Race needs to be irrelevant in the political and socioeconomic sphere. Now to some extent, people should recognize the differences between the varying races. But the differences that should be recognized are that of the beauty and variety of all the different colors, backgrounds, and histories of these races. But never in the form of a so-called â€Å"recognition† of specific abilities to certain races, and specially so as to distinguish it as inferior or superior to another race. Moving onto the next article which is titled, â€Å"Gender Perspective in Cross-Cultural Couples,† it states that in modern relationships, the concept of intimacy and the right to happiness have become the core of what is considered to be a solid and committed relationship. Also, increased cultural movement, immigration, tourism, job training, and stud y abroad have created couples who romantic choices reach across cultural, racial, and religious lines. Therefore, people are no longer looking at color of skin, religious views, or ethnicity, but simply who and what makes them happy. We often look to our significant others for certain qualities, certain roles and expected behavior that we hope will fit our roles and help to balance us out. A study that I came across which was titled, â€Å"Interracial Dating Attitudes Among College Students,† involved 620 University students who completed an anonymous questionnaire that helped to assess attitudes towards interracial dating. The result of that study showed that almost one fourth (24. %) reported having dated interracially and almost half (49. 6%) expressed an openness to becoming involved in an interracial relationship. Interracial dating is growing steadily and something that is helping it to grow are increased individualism, tolerance for diversity, and greater minority enrollment in college and universities. She was not having any luck with that site so she decided to go back and act like a white women, and the results were that the white women got more emails and calls for jobs then Yolanda did. If we could slowly start to improve our countries thoughts when it comes to race and employment, we could be more balanced and successful. In a color blind society we would have equal opportunity employment. The next topic to be discussed is stereotypes and media. Stereotypes in the media are very common. Media stereotypes of â€Å"angry black women† have become more noticeable in recent years, and this stereotype is effecting how people see race. Black women in the media are more than often portrayed as dark skin, loud â€Å"ghetto acting† women. There have been television shows that have tried to help with different races such as the Jefferson’s and The Cosby Show. Those shows were still criticized for their use of stereotyped black characters. Another television show named Ugly Betty, had a main character who was a light skinned women named Wilhelmina. Wilhelmina simply was not seen as a black women because of her social mobility and her light colored skin and eyes. That statement alone from the fans of Ugly Betty, brings up colorblind racism or media stereotype racism. If we want to become a colorblind society then the media needs to do a better job at being colorblind. People of different races and ethnicities help to bring different personalities to the media which can be a very positive thing. In conclusion, the world would be a better, more positive place if we were completely colorblind. Stereotypes in dating, employment and media all need to change before our society can become colorblind. Interracial dating is steadily growing, and we are seeing some change in stereotypes and media, but the biggest adjustment that we need to make is stereotypes in employment. The San Francisco 1989 Earthquake The Loma Prieta Earthquake On Tuesday October 17, 1989 at 5:04 PM the Loma Prieta earthquake struck the San Francisco, Monterey Bay, and Silicon Valley areas. Those were no the only areas affected. Many areas up to 70 and 100 miles away could feel the tremble of the quake. The epicenter of the quake was in the Santa Cruz Mountains. The quake measured a magnitude of 7.1. The initial quake lasted 15 seconds. The USGS first thought the magnitude of the quake would be about 6.9 but it increased to 7.1. The quake destroyed many buildings and freeways. A section of the San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge collapsed. The power was out in many places and the telephone lines were out also. This was the first time the power had been out since the 1906 earthquake. The earthquake killed 68 people and injured 3,757 people. The cost of the quake was estimated at $6 to $7 billion dollars. The quake happened during the 1989 World Series. The San Francisco Giants were playing the Oakland Athletics. The match up was called the ?Bay Bridge? World Series. The game was postponed for a month. They were playing at Candlestick Park. Airports were closed for inspection or repairs. Ceiling Tiles and broken glass were the main reason for the airports being closed. After a while the airports reopened and some local pilots helped fly emergency supplies to airports near the seriously damaged and in need areas. The fires were disastrous they burned down apartment buildings, shops and even the fire chief's house in one city. Some people went looting in the downtown areas. The District Attorney said, ?If there is anyone arrested tonight for burglary or looting, tomorrow morning we are going to go into court and demand that there is no bail. Anyone engaged in that kind of conduct can expect maximum sentences.? Some people were arrested for looting and they were severely penalized. The earthquake didn't only cause trouble for the San Francisco Bay area. It caused a four-foot tsunami wave in Monterey Bay as well as a huge undersea landslide.
